Torrance Adult School Fall Digital Photo Classes

I’ve just received my fall schedule for the digital photography classes I will be teaching at the Torrance Griffith Adult Center. You can see the description and schedule by clicking here to go to my web site. For convenience, I have included the information below.

For those of you who are on my email distribution list and did not receive an email today or within a couple days it is probably because your email came back undelivered. I spent about two hours reconciling the list today, and that means you are no longer on it.  If you would like to be added back on, please email me.

Also, for those of you interested in the classes I teach at the South Bay Adult School, I posted its schedule in an earlier post.

Fall 2009 Schedule

7-17-09

I will be teaching a total of five separate classes at the Griffith Adult Center this fall. We are using Photoshop Elements 7.0. The fall catalog should be available soon, which is generally when registration begins. I will be distributing handouts from password protected pages attached to my blog in a similar manner as I did during the spring.  You will be given the password and any handouts needed for the first day of class at the first session.

Please note there is only one level of camera class this term. This class will be for both those just starting out and/or using a relative simple digital camera. that does not allow for manually selecting the shutter speed and lens aperture. The same class will also accommodate those students using a digital SLR or a more sophisticated compact digital camera, which does allow one to manually set the shutter speed and F-Stop setting. However, the student need not be advanced. In-class shooting assignments will vary with the camera type being used as necessary.

The following are the basic descriptions for digital photography classes I will be teaching in the fall.

 Digital Photography & Organizing Photos

This is the course to start with if you are new to digital photography, thinking about it, or just want to find out what all of the fuss is about. But, it is also the one course that will help you keep track of and protect all of those digital images you have been collecting on your computer. You will learn how to use the Organizer of Photoshop Elements beginning with importing images to your PC, managing them, and then protecting them.

This course builds an excellent foundation for the photo editing courses offered. The class will also introduce you to creative ways to share your photos with others, including slide shows, photo albums etc. We also discuss digital cameras, printers and scanners.

Thursdays, 12:30-2:30 pm, beginning September 17th.

Get to Know Your Digital Camera

For this term, the basic and the more advanced camera classes will be combined into a single class. In-class assignments and instructions will structured to accommodate the more advanced cameras as appropriate.

Do you find the manual that came with your new digital camera confusing?  Or maybe some of the pictures you have taken using its programmed or automatic mode did not turn out like you had hoped. Are you struggling a bit to understand or set all of those options you are presented with, let alone knowing how and when to use them? If so, then this may just be the class to help you get more from your digital camera. This is a hands-on course – your hands on your camera. Class size is purposely being kept small to maximize the benefit to you. For those of you who have DSLR cameras, in-class assignments and instruction will be structured to accommodate your camera as appropriate.

Wednesdays, 5:30-7:30 pm, beginning September 16th. (6 Meetings)

Please note, there is an information sheet that lists what you should bring with you to the first class, and a couple of things you need to do prior to the first class meeting. Click here to see these instructions.

Get to Know Your Digital Camera – Advanced
(Combined with the Basic Camera Class for the Fall Term)

This class is designed for those people who have a digital SLR or a more advanced compact digital camera that allows the shutter speed and lens aperture to be selected manually. The exercises we do will focus on those features that are available on these more advanced cameras. We will begin using the automatic and programmed modes, but will then move on to the manual modes for more creative control of the image. This is a hands-on course – your hands on your camera. Class size is purposely being kept small to maximize the benefit to you. If you are brand new to digital photography, you may want to take the beginning camera class described above first.

Please note, there is an information sheet that lists what you should bring with you to the first class, and a couple of things you need to do prior to the first class meeting. Click here to see these instructions.

 Digital Photography and Editing

This class deals with improving and enhancing your photo images once you have transferred them to your computer. The course basically deals with the Edit Mode of Photoshop Elements 6. Using layers and the various selection tools are just two of the topics thoroughly covered. Specific exercises also address converting photo images into works of art. This course will also address the Guided Edit task pane that was new in Photoshop Elements 6. Although not specifically covered in class exercises, scanning, obtaining quality prints, and related digital photography topics are discussed and/or demonstrated as appropriate.

Wednesdays, 12:30-2:30 pm, beginning Sptember 16th.

 Digital Photography Projects

Explore the variety of ways that you can share your digital images with family, friends, and colleagues. This course will cover making slide shows in Photoshop Elements 7 and other photo projects possible using the program. The course also covers using Movie Maker for editing video files and augmenting slide shows produced in PSE. The free Photo Story 3 program from Microsoft will also be explored.

This course can viewed as a basic introduction to digital video editing, as well as digital photography in general. In this course you will work with you own pictures, video clips, and music.

Tuesdays, 12:30-2:30 pm, beginning September 15th.

Digital Photography and Editing – Advanced

During this course, more advanced built-in imaging editing and special effects capabilities using the Edit Mode of Photoshop Elements will be explored. New tools in later versions of Photoshop Elements will be explored. Free or low-cost third party plug-in programs are available that give Photoshop Elements capabilities well beyond those that come with the boxed program. The course will cover the installation and use of some of selected plug-ins.  Examples include the use of curves, channels, grain/noise reduction, and other advanced editing and special effects tools. Students will be given a CD containing these plug-in programs as part of the course.

Thursdays, 6:00-8:00 pm, beginning September 17th.

  1. Don,
I am one of your digital photography class students in Torrance. I am having trouble downloading course handouts for tomorrrow’s class.
I could not find the page for our class. And I don’t remember being told what the password is. Could be because I was late.
    Thank you,
    Erlinda Rojas
